Community News

A Silicon Valley technology company that helps businesses manage their customer wait lists has moved its headquarters to Charleston. Waitlist Me said Wednesday that it has opened an office in the Charleston Digital Corridor's Flagship 1 building at East Bay and Calhoun streets.

Its app service was once known as NoshList, which targeted restaurants, but about a year ago the company changed its name and broadened its focus to appeal to multiple industries. The firm was founded in 2012 in California.

Waitlist Me's smartphone and tablet app enables businesses to quote waiting times to their customers and send text notifications when their wait is over.

"Many businesses are still struggling by using paper or clunky buzzer systems, and don't realize there are better ways to manage their waits," the company said.

The service costs $19.99 a month. The company said it has served more than 100 million customers. As part of its Charleston opening, the firm is seeking local nominees to receive 10 free one-year subscriptions at www.waitlist.me/charleston.

Waitlist Me has hired a vice president of engineering for the new office, and it plans to add more employees starting in May, CEO Brian Hutchins said in an email.

Hutchins has ties to the state. He has a master's degree in business administration from the University of South Carolina and has family in the area.

"Charleston is a true hidden gem for tech startups," Hutchins said in a statement. "When you consider the beauty of the area and all the things the city has to offer, it is hard to beat the quality of life, and that is a key strategic advantage in attracting and retaining top talent.

Furthermore, smart investments made in infrastructure and programs to support business innovation are starting to pay dividends in Charleston, and the local tech economy is evolving rapidly."
